The AAO recommends children receive an orthodontic screening by age 7.
Do you wonder if your child’s teeth are developing normally? Are you noticing any crooked teeth or gaps? Concerned about family history of dental issues?
The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that all children have an evaluation by an orthodontic specialist around age 7 when their permanent teeth begin to erupt. This evaluation serves to identify potential developmental issues in the teeth and jaws, such as severe teeth crowding, large gaps between teeth, failure of some permanent teeth to erupt, crossbites and overbites. While orthodontic treatment may not be necessary at this stage, detecting and treating certain conditions early can help prevent more severe problems in the future, such as teeth impactions, invasive procedures, or jaw surgery.
In cases where treatment is indicated at an early age, the duration of treatment is typically limited to 6-12 months to address the current issue. Afterward, your child will be re-evaluated when most or all of their permanent teeth have erupted to determine if any additional orthodontic treatment is necessary. In some instances, no further treatment may be required. However, if additional orthodontic treatment is indicated, the early correction achieved can significantly reduce the treatment time needed.
Even if immediate treatment is not yet indicated, these early visits provide an excellent opportunity for your child to become comfortable with our office, staff, and Dr. Cline.
